Bike Advisory Council - Bike Lane Meeting
INDYCOG was invited to the Indianapolis Bike Advisory Council meeting yesterday. Fortunately, I was able to clear my schedule to make it and I'm so grateful that I did as it was quite possibly the most positive and productive meeting I've attended that had to do with cycling in Indianapolis.
The meeting consisted of an all-star group of local cycling advocates and city planners. We mostly collaborated on the city's bike lane safety and education campaign that will be launched in the spring of 2010. One of the main features will be a "law enforcement blitz" that will target motorists and cyclist interacting with the bike lanes incorrectly. Specifically vehicles parked/traveling in the lanes and cyclist traveling "upstream" as well as pedestrians walking the bike lanes. (Seriously, to all you weirdos walking in the bike lanes, what the ?)
The meeting made it clear that the city is committed to educating the public on how to interact with bike lanes and cyclists on city streets as well as promoting cycling safety.
To get this inside look on the development of the future of cycling in Indianapolis was incredible. The city planners are vested in creating a positive cycling experience in Indianapolis. They want to hear our voices as cyclists and we plan on attending future meetings to express our opinions and the opinions of our readers.
I wish I were able to divulge all the information that I was barraged with in this meeting. I will say this though; the future of cycling in Indianapolis is looking very bright!

I'll tell you, I've been fighting for many, many years for better bicycling in Indy as part of a local advocacy group and I'm shocked by your statements. I think it's wonderful! I used to leave the MPO meetings so mad that I wanted to throw my bike against a brick wall. At that time, working with the MPO was like, well, working with a brick wall. We would feed ideas, they would "seem" to accept them and act interested. Then, a few weeks later, it was like they had no idea who we were and forgot that they even met with us a few weeks earlier. I'm really glad that things are starting to improve.
hahahah....i remember those sorts of experiences with the Multi-Modal Transportation Committee. We did so much foot work for them, basically gave them everything they needed short of the check (that they said THEY'D give to US) and then balked when it came time to take action. Sour grapes. Glad to hear things are turning around on that end.
This is great news! Awesome to hear that Indycog was invited! Is it time to think about creating an official lobby organization/non-profit? I know we already have Bicycle Indiana, but how about something just for Indianapolis? I for one would be interested in helping with any such effort.
